How do you know if a small business oportunity is real?

You have probably read hundreds (thousands) of 1 page sales letters with their (fake?) testimonials saying

“Yes John your system is really great it made me $1000 before I woke up for breakfast and another $1000 when I stepped out of my mansion and into my porsche.”

(A little embellished here)

Anyway you get the idea?

How to check for the con artist

The first two things I do are:

1. Do a Google search with the following text:

“name of product” scam

This should turn up bad products quickly and it’s better than wasting money yourself.

2. Search in the Warrior forum

These people know and use tools and are not afraid to lay the cards out about any product.

(You have to sign up to search - but that costs nothing - and you don’t need to post).

3. Find someone you trust

These may not cover all aspects so its a good idea to find some personal recommendation from people you trust e.g. find a business site that has reviewed some products that you have researched elsewhere.

If they agree with your thinking on those products (good and bad) then it’s a fair bet that the new product they report on will match your mindset (so you can trust that information source).

Starting Small Business Online: The Wrong Way:
Seven steps you must avoid

I recently read an article called:

7 Steps to Help You Launch Your Internet Business!

…and I could not believe what I was reading. The gist of it was this:

  1. Check for an available domain name. (Don’t do this)
  2. Register your trading name. (Don’t do this)
  3. Determine your payment method. (Don’t do this)
  4. Design your site. (Don’t do this)
  5. Find a host. (Don’t do this)
  6. Promote your site. (Don’t do this)
  7. Maintain your site. (Don’t do this)

Do not follow the steps (in this order)…

…you will guarantee your own failure.

Note: I have put (Don’t do this) as there is a better process detailed further on.

What’s Wrong?

The list sounds very reasonable and you could say what’s wrong with it after all it is the same process followed by thousands of small business owners…

…nothing except that…

I know it does not work

…I know because it’s exactly the way that I tried starting a small business on the internet.

Traffic

The lifeblood of your business will be visitors - called traffic in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) world.

In the offline world in the shops and malls the most important thing for getting visitors to your shop is:

location, location, location.

In the online world you have to know what is the equivalent and it is:

information, information, information

If you think about it the internet is used by people mainly searching for information (hence the popularity of Google) so you must create a site geared to giving people the information that they are searching for.

Real steps to starting a small business online

If you look at the seven step list above none of the steps are about understanding your visitors or what they want and that is why those steps will fail.

There is one process that will guarantee a successful business and it has ten steps:

1. Content
Understand what it takes to make a site work
(information, information, information)

2. Theme
Choose a theme for your site
that you are passionate/knowledgeable about.

3. Demand
Determine if your site theme is in demand.
Go back to step 2 if not.

4. Plan (not execute) Monetization
Plan how you will make money
from the site (you may already know this).

5. Domain name
Regsiter an ideal domain name.

6. Create a site
Build
a site that works (one that gets the click).

7. Build Traffic
Build FREE traffic (I do not use paid services such as adwords) and I get over 650 visitors per day to my site (see below).

8. Build Relationships
Learn how to improve traffic by getting people to return to your site.

9. Understand Visitors
Know your visitors by using
stats gathering software to see who visits.

10. Monetize your site.

Things to notice from this list

You have to put your desire to make money last because your visitors are first of all looking for information (not how they can send you money). This process is known as C T P M and it is a method that works. The letters mean:

C - Content (information, information, information).

T - Traffic (build this before any other step - no visitors means no money).

P - Presell (How to write a website without being a pushy salesman).

M - Monetize (add your presold offerings to visitors in a friendly trusted way).

So your initial objective is to build a site that people want to visit. First you must give (information) - the visitors will then get to know you and start buying your offerings.

Notice how the last list is a complete contrast to the first one and virtually every step is in the opposite order. In addition there is no discussion of what it really takes to make a site work.

So How is my site doing?

1. It has over 650 visitors per day (15/Aug/07) and is increasing month on month.

So that’s about 20,000 visitors per month!

It is a niche site created on a subject I am familiar with - you can do the same for any subject that you are passionate/knowledgeable about.

Note: It does not matter that it is a technical site since the principles of building a site that works are the same whatever the subject.

Churn Rate

Did you know that 99 percent of all small online business’s fail and that it’s due to the hosting companies hiding the truth.

These hosting companies refer to the online business failure rate as the churn rate i.e. the rate at which new online businesses start, go for a while and then are dropped by the owner because they did not work.

Hosting

For Starting a business online you could use any hosting company and you will find that it’s very cheap to get started (say $3 a month for x amount of bandwidth and x amount of space). You can also add a shopping cart and have your website up within a couple of hours – later you can add email, forms and autoresponders etc.

Let me ask you an important question:

Why don’t these hosting companies show
you all the successful sites that they host?

This would surely be a great advertising method because you would know that starting a business online is possible and achievable; you would know that the hosting provider is an expert in guiding you on how to achieve real results using the internet.

Unfortunately those companies are not interested in your success – they are more interested in keeping the churn rate going so they have a continuous stream of revenue – your success is almost irrelevant to them.

Sure, they provide all the bells and whistles; MySQL databases, extra SEO (at higher cost) and this is one of the problems because you need extras to succeed.

They reel you in with a low cost hosting solution and then you realize that you need more and more tools and features and then squeeze you for more and more money until you have had enough and give up.

Starting a small business online: What’s the best way ?

Starting a small business

The best way of starting (and continuing) your own small business online is to…

…do something you really enjoy.

That way you will be enthusiastic in building your website and you won’t get tired of it.

With that in mind what is the first step in starting a business online?

  • is it to find an accountant?
  • is it to make a business plan?
  • is it to find funding?
  • is it to approach others for a joint venture?

These things may be important BUT if you have nothing to sell then they are pointless.

What you really need to do is:

  1. Choose a subject you like.
  2. Find out if your subject is something that is in demand.
  3. Find out if people will be prepared to buy what you make/recommend.

This means market research - and how do you go about that? It sounds like spending lots of money and in the offline world it is but…online it’s free!

Use a Crystal Ball!

You need one to find out what people want tomorrow.

Believe it or not…

…in the online world crystal balls do exist and they are tools that use the data from the past to indicate what will happen in the future. When you type in a search at google that information is logged in the google’s database application and stored.

Every search made at google (and other engines) is logged in a database (each search phrase is known as a keyword). You can find out what people searched for in a previous month by using the free tool at digital point:

If you were interested in the subject of fishing you can just type fishing into the tool and it will come back with the main keyword but also lots of other keywords that people searched for (that also contain the keyword fishing).

The tool shows two columns one called Wordtracker and one called Overture and each show is a database of recorded results showing your keyword at the top and showing the number of searches per day for each keyword phrase.

So the tool does your market research for you and by clicking the button in that tool you just asked millions of people whether they are interested in fishing!

That is an amazingly powerful marketing tool and it enables you to identify target markets without any trouble at all.

Successfully Starting a small Business online

One thing to remember is that to be successful you must not enter an area that is too large as all the major companies will dominate that area of the internet.

You really need to find what is known as a niche i.e. a small enough area that is not noticed by the big players but one that offers enough demand for it to be profitable for you.

An ideal demand for a target niche is about 10,000 searches per month. So try to find something you are interested in that has about 300-500 searches per day.

This is all part of the process in finding a niche where you can have a successful website.
